Attending conferences has always been one of my favorite professional activities. At this point in my career, they not only help me to increase my understanding of educational issues and research, but they offer an opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals from around the US and the world and have meaningful, challenging conversations. Each year, I have tried to be selective in my conference presentations, attending those that help me improve my teaching and hone my research skills and agenda.
The conferences listed below are those where I have presented while at Appalachian State. Conference presentations, even in times of strict budgets, are an essential component of our professional growth and development and I look forward to attending at least a few each year. Those I feel are most beneficial to my research and teaching are:
I am extremely thankful that I have had the opportunity to attend and present at so many conferences. I currently have 34 presentations, two of which were invited, 32 of which were proposed and accepted. I have included the references here for my presentations; some individual and some collaborative. Many of these presentations have been expanded or altered into manuscripts for publication. I have included links to representative presentations from the conferences noted above. I am happy to provide all the links, if necessary or desired.
The conferences listed below are those where I have presented while at Appalachian State. Conference presentations, even in times of strict budgets, are an essential component of our professional growth and development and I look forward to attending at least a few each year. Those I feel are most beneficial to my research and teaching are:
- AMLE - The Association of Middle Level Education (formerly the National Middle School Association) is the premier annual conference for middle level educators. Attendance at this national conference, and specifically at the Middle Level Education Research special interest group meetings and National Professors of Middle Level Education meetings have heavily influenced both my teaching and my scholarship. Each year, I also bring students with me to this conference.I encourage them and mentor them in writing proposals and presenting. The number of students each year depends on location, but it has grown substantially. In 2010, I took two students with me. The following year, 12 attended. In 2012, only five were able to attend because of the west coast location. In 2013, 12 students attended and in next week, I attend AMLE 2014 in Nashville, TN with 19 students, 7 of whom are presenting.
- ATE - The Association of Teacher Educators is a smaller, more affordable conference and one that has a diverse membership at all levels - teachers, administrators, faculty, and preservice teachers. ATE also has a special interest group meeting that specifically addresses middle level education and there are opportunities for leadership in that group. ATE is also the organization in which I have been invited to serve on the Diversity Committee for 2013-2015. That role is very important in the current era and our group is tasked with making official comments to the media and membership about diversity issues or inequitable practices in the states/cities where the conference is held. In 2015, because it is held in the political climate of Phoenix, AZ, keynote speakers were specifically chosen with guidance from the committee to address issues/policies of, for example, English Language Learners.
- NCMLE - The North Carolina Association for Middle Level Education is a wonderful state/regional conference that is held nearby in Greensboro, NC each March. This conference provides an opportunity to follow up with colleagues across the state on conversations and projects begun in our meeting times in the fall at AMLE. It is also a chance for the North Carolina Professors of Middle Level Education to meet about current issues relevant to our work in North Carolina. Currently, I serve as the Secretary of that organization, a role I value and appreciate. This conference is also a wonderful opportunity to bring students along. Each year, I have brought 6-10 students, many of whom present. It is a chance for them to network with principals and teachers across the state as they are preparing for the job search.
- AERA - The American Educational Research Association conference is an extremely large meeting that offers an extremely wide range of topics in educational research. A mentor of mine once said the only way to benefit from it is to "make it your size." To do so, I have joined Division K, which focuses on teacher education, the Middle Level Educational Research special interest group, and the Self-Study of Teacher Education Practices (S-STEP) special interest group. Those three smaller groups provide me with enough sessions and opportunities to fill the conference. The S-STEP meeting is an important one, as this is the only meeting of the group that occurs each year. Continuing those relationships and conversations is crucial to my research. And, at the Middle Level Education Research meeting last April in Philadelphia, I was elected to be a Council Member for two years. Thus, attendance at the conference for the next two years is a must to fulfill my duties on the council.
- S-STEP Castle Conference - This is a biennial international conference of the Self-Study of Teacher Education Practices (S-STEP) held in England in the even years. I attended in 2010, 2012, and 2014 and hope to continue attending. It is a small, selective conference with only 100-125 possible attendees. This conference is unique in that we all stay together in dorms, eat all meals together, and attend the conference in that same space--a castle. That close proximity allows for conversations to move outside of the presentation spaces into more informal, personable spaces. It is an extremely welcoming community of teacher researchers that provide excellent feedback on papers and proposals. The members of this organization, because their research and teaching are so closely connected, have been teachers themselves to those of us starting out in academia. The one-on-one attention and mentoring is unmatched and the potential for similar mentoring or leadership roles is not too far in my future with this organization.
