Course Evaluations
My research interests are closely connected to the desire to improve my practice. Thus, they involve the use of student feedback and evaluation as both formative assessments and as a model of professional learning communities. With those goals in mind, many of my course evaluations had been mixed method, asking students to respond to both quantitative and qualitative questions. In these first few years in higher education, I struggled to find an evaluation tool that allowed me to compare one course to another and to compare myself to my colleagues within and outside the College of Education. As we moved to online evaluation tools, I welcomed that opportunity for comparison. In anticipation of that shift, I switched to my own course evaluations online for a year. Prior to that, they were in a more traditional paper and pencil format. While the new, online formats are more convenient and can more easily manipulate the data, the more traditional formats allowed me to delve more deeply into the data as I compiled the students' responses for reporting.
With the lack of a uniform evaluation tool, until now, my evaluations are somewhat difficult to view as a "big picture" of my teaching. However, they do share a common theme of positivity. Students often report that I am very responsive to their needs and their requests. Many also feel that, as an instructor, I have moved them toward a greater understanding of the social and academic issues young adolescents face in terms of race, class, gender, ethnicity, language, sexuality, and background. Some of the best feedback I have received has been that students never knew before what they didn't know! That, to me, demonstrates effective teaching. While we cannot always make major changes, I believe students (and I) appreciate the small, daily adjustments we make with increased awareness and understanding. Looking back over my evaluations, I also believe that I have demonstrated growth and professional development based on the feedback of my students. While my first year's evaluations were not "bad" per se, they have improved over time and have then fluctuated as I develop and teach a new class or make changes to current courses.
My evaluations are provided here by semester. Some are summaries that I created as part of my research and teaching agenda. Others are created with the use of Google Docs. Whenever possible, I encourage you to read the student open-ended, qualitative comments. As always, there are some less than positive comments or values, but overall my evaluations are high. I know that I can always improve and have endeavored to continue my strong record of teaching even when faced with new leadership roles and responsibilities. I have noticed, since becoming Program Director, a dip in my evaluations, particularly in the areas of organization and responsiveness. These are my explicit goals for the 2014 year. I am working on time management and being more responsive to my students.
