Laurie A. Ramirez is an Assistant Professor in the middle grades education program in the Department of Curriculum & Instruction at Appalachian State University. Prior to coming to Appalachian State, she taught middle school Spanish, English language arts, world languages, and English-as-a-second-language for over ten years in Salt Lake City, Utah. During that time, she earned a Masters' degree in Linguistics and a doctorate in Teaching and Learning, both from the University of Utah. At Appalachian, Laurie teaches several education courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels, including courses which emphasize young adolescent development, advocacy for individuals from diverse backgrounds, and critically reflective/culturally responsive teaching practices. Her research interests include middle level teacher preparation, critical reflection on issues of diversity in education, self-study of teacher education practices, and the scholarship of teaching and learning. She has published and presented at the state, national, and international level, with representative articles recently appearing in the North Carolina Middle School Journal, Teacher Education Quarterly, The Teacher Educator, and Studying Teacher Education. Laurie also provides service to university, state, national, and international organizations. She is currently functioning as the advisor of the Collegiate Middle Level Association at Appalachian, as a member of the review boards of numerous journals and conferences, and in support roles for various professional organizations. Laurie also does service to local and global communities. She has helped design and oversee three service trips through the university's International Alternative Service Experience program and is on the Executive Board of a local non-profit, the F.A.R.M. Cafe.
